I've talked with several devs that have some experience with OpenGL and even one with Metal and I understand that those could be used to accomplish this. Now I've already learned that in an ideal situation, I'd be using the GPU to display these gifs. It's just the nature of displaying these gifs on iOS. This is due to how the FLAnimatedImage library provided by Flipboard works. The only thing out of the ordinary is that my transient counts are really high. You'll notice that the actual memory being used at once (persistent) is completely fine and normal looking. However, when I run the app in Instruments using the Allocations tool, these are the results I get when not even using the app and just letting it sit there for 5 minutes, same test as above: You will notice that the memory usage is extremely high: ![]() If I run the app, and don't even touch my phone, after 5 minutes this is what the debug navigator shows me in terms of memory and CPU usage. I am using a popular gif library made by Flipboard and also a powerful image caching library so everything has been optimized as much as possible already for the displaying of animated gifs.
